Biodiversity Happens in the Garden
I’ve made a list of animals and birds I’ve seen in my garden in the past year. I’ll try to keep track in the next year to see if more species or less show up. I’d be interested to see what others have spotted. Please post your results.
My Animal list 2020:
Frog, Tadpole, Newt, Toad, Lizard, Earthworm, Slow-worm, Grass Snake, Rabbit, Rat, Shrew, Vole
My Bird list 2020:
Blackbird, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Blackcap, Dunnock, House Sparrow, Cirl Bunting, Wren, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Magpie, Crow, Tawny Owl, Long-tailed Tit, Robin, Swallow, Pheasant, Song Thrush, Greenfinch, House Martin, Herring Gull, Sparrow Hawk.
My Insect list 2020: I’m not great on identifying insects, but here are some I’ve noticed:
Glow worm, Dragon Fly, Damsel Fly (Red), Damsel Fly (Blue),
Peacock Butterfly, Sulphur-tip Butterfly, Red Admiral Butterfly, Comma Butterfly, Cabbage White Butterfly, Bumble Bees, Hover Flies, Flies and Spiders of various sorts, Wasps, unidentified bugs in the pond.
I’m sure that adding a pond and leaving an area of rough, uncut grass has boosted the variety list.
This winter, 2020/21, there are fewer birds eating at our feeders than usual, for some reason. Perhaps our neighbours are offering a more attractive menu!
